We also know that eco-friendly packaging contributes to the sustainability profile of our products, so we are actively working to produce recyclable packaging with a low environmental impact.
The 5 Rs
To achieve sustainable packaging design, Tide is guided by The 5 Rs: Remove, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover. What does each R mean?
In designing both primary and secondary sustainable packaging, the goal is to remove unnecessary materials, as well as any materials that are not recyclable. Anything we can do to optimize the mix of materials will have a positive impact on the sustainability profile of the product.
This means that we aim to reduce the volume of material content in our packaging - both primary and secondary- so that fewer materials are required to bring Tide to market.
Using more recycled materials in the production of our packages means we are not depleting resources, but instead, putting existing resources to use in new packages. Currently, Tide Liquid bottles contain at least 25% post-consumer recycled material, and we plan to increase that amount.
Tide Liquid has been packaged in a fully recyclable bottle since its introduction in 1984, and Tide Powder detergent boxes are made of cardboard that can be recycled rather than added to a landfill.
In order to ensure there is an adequate supply of recycled materials, we must encourage consumer recycling efforts. That is why Procter & Gamble supports both the Closed Loop Fund and The Recycling Partnership, two organizations that focus on increasing the availability of recycled materials through improved recycling programs across the US.
